An Ignorant Homophobic Mother

This is a response to a story posted by Shirley A. Rorvik who described the experience of her son's coming out. Although it was published way back in 1997, this attitude is still relevant to the experience of today.

Her thoughts are very much one of "how does this affect me?". She lacks the ability to truly see beyond her own religious beliefs, insecurities and hate. I don't think she would ever have the ability to absorb what I'm about to write here in a truly thoughtful way. So, I hope that this at least makes someone else out there think twice about having these kind of attitudes.

The rubbish of her statements are littered with the internal insecurities that rise through her inability to acknowledge that she might have more issues to deal with than her son. I'm also pretty certain that her version of events are twisted toward her distorted view of the world around her.

Let us begin...

"I first became aware of how much I despised homosexuality when I worked at a savings and loan in 1981."

My name is ignorant, and I'm a homophobic... There are places and people she can see for that mental problem.

"Don [not his real name], referred to as a "queer" in our small town,"

'Don' make me say this. You know what they think about the minds of people in small towns...

"shoved his savings passbook across the counter for a large cash withdrawal."

Goodness. What a horrible, horrible man. I'm surprised he didn't reach across the counter and slap her senseless. Evil homosexuals. And a large cash withdrawal? Is this detail necessary? Is there a problem with a homosexual having a lot of money? Does she think this man gained it through some illegitimate way?

"He glanced over his shoulder and spoke to his companion, a good-looking boy of about eighteen. The boy laughed and his eyes met mine, full of mockery and challenge."

Firstly, she doesn't know they are sexual partners at all. Secondly, it was probably a response to their sensing of her homophobia. Have you ever seen a black person's stance toward a racist glance? You get my point nigga. Lastly, she was probably just jealous she could never draw in such a good looking lad.

Don't go saying words like that dear... you might give us ideas...

OH MY GOD!!! Two people walking arm in arm. What has the world come to?

How can the cause be proven? How does she know that her attitudes toward this event didn't affect others around her which contributed to their issues?

Hers. The rest of the world kept spinning intact.

"Coffee splashed as I slammed my cup on the table and threw down the letter. No, Tim couldn't possibly understand, or he'd never have written this."

Here we go...

" ' … I am who I am, and it's taken me thirteen years to be able to accept this. … ' Thirteen years? No. No, I'd have known. What about his girlfriends in high school and college? How could he be gay? What happened? Where had I failed? "

Well with a mother with her sort of attitude, I'm not surprised her son did the unthinkable to feel accepted. Go against the nature of his sexual orientation. What self-disrespect.

"I fell to my knees sobbing. Then pulling myself off the floor, I grabbed my keys, snatched up Tim's letter, and ran to my car, taking off in the winter night."

Drama queen. Too many soap operas. This leads to a series of dramatic and-the-universe-was-against-me events. But let us not waste too much space here.

"But, I said, homosexuality is a sin. "You're not alone, Tim. I'm here and Jesus is too. God loves you. Remember Romans 8:38-39?"

Remember Deuteronomy 28:53? Eat your children. (I'm not kidding!)

"He told me of a couple more childhood incidents when older boys had threatened or bribed him into cooperating with their sexual indulgences."

Many children are subject to all kinds of sexual experiences. None of them can turn anyone gay.

"Dad wanted to go to this gay bar."

Maybe it is genetic?

"I recalled other business trips when Tim was nine or ten. At the time, I was pleased my husband was spending time with this younger son. Did something happen then? I tried to question Tim, but he refused to talk about it. He didn't remember. He thought he'd had a happy childhood. I let it go."

I'm sure she hasn't.

"I received the names of two Christian men in San Diego who had renounced homosexuality and were available to counsel others."

I'm sure the part they forgot to tell her about is they are only convinced to change their behaviour. You can't change someone's sexual orientation. I could probably convince her to stop breathing. But she would probably die.

"After Tim's letter in 1992, I regarded my adult son as a victim."

Of a mother's repressive and guilt trip mentality.

"'They' had caught and trapped him. 'They' were faceless, nameless, evil people. Homosexuals. Enemies."

I would say the same about her and religion.

"But God wasn't finished with me yet."

Because, if he exists, he must have a wicked sense of humour.

"Tim brought a friend home—a homosexual."

GOOD LORD! Start piling the coals on the stake! Hang on... hasn't she lived with a homosexual? Possibly two? ;)

"I've learned to hate the sin while I love, or at least care for, the sinner."

Unfortunately, as with every other repressed group of people, if you hate in essence what they are, of which they are not at fault; and is in no way immoral or wrong; then you are closing yourself to the truth of who they are. I feel sorry for this woman.

"Tim often brings homosexual friends when he comes to visit me and my new husband, Chuck."

First she divorced, then she remarried?!!!! You're going straight to hell lady... do not pass Go.

"Tim never asks to stay overnight when he has a companion."

Which he possibly feels very sad about. Just to keep her shattered world intact. What stressful hell to go through.

Sorry Mrs I'm-Ever-So-Delusional. This world is coming to realise that this garden is one of acceptance of the truth that homosexuals are the same as everyone else and all that sin mumbo jumbo is a load of bible belting bollocks.

Time for her to get a clue. What was I saying about her deluded fragile world?

That is just one way to keep your head in the sand and not accept the truth.

In her opinion. Maybe his happiness isn't there because his mother will never truly understand that homosexuality isn't a sin, that no one is at fault, and that it is a perfectly legitimate sexual orientation. Maybe he is sad that he can not truly be himself in front of her and share in his life completely. Maybe the stress of hiding prevents him from sustaining a stable, long lasting relationship with the man he loves.

So okay, I've been pretty sarcastic (and mean) with some of my comments. But seriously, if we can't politely and rationally drive truth through these space heads, then we might as well have a bit of fun in the process.

Apple issued a short statement on its Hot News page today saying it is publicly opposing California Proposition 8, and donating $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign.

Proposition 8 seeks to amend California's constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry. A "no" vote on the measure means marriages between same-sex couples would continue to be valid in California.

"Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees' same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person's fundamental rights -- including the right to marry -- should not be affected by their sexual orientation," the statement read.

"Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8."

I'm an avid reader of "Good As You". I don't have time to sift through all the Online crud. G.A.Y. does it for me. What frustrates me though is a sense that we're all focusing on the wrong thing. The gay say: "we want equal rights". The uninformed (or are they?) opposition reply: "McDonalds is no longer safe for our children". What the?

This conversation reminds me of the poorly programmed chat bots from ten years ago that reply with all sorts of nonsensical rubbish. Except they have an excuse. They're not human.

Anyway, I've decided to try my luck again and converse with 'Mary', a chatter box who lives in www.ulrahal.com. Here goes...

Forky: Pissed off. How are you?
Mary: I am sorry you are pissed off. I am fine. How are you?
Forky: You've already asked that. Anyway, what is pissing me off is that anti-gay groups seem to think we are all perverted, society corrupting, homo converting prostitutes. What do you think of that?
Mary: Oh. Sorry. Do you like elvis? I refuse to tell you what pissing you off is that antigay groups seem to think we are all perverted society corrupting homo converting prostitutes is. I know that? Are wonderful.
Forky: No I don't like Elvis. What does that have to do with anything I just said? Why won't you answer my question, and why do you reply with a totally unrelated one?
Mary: Yes you do. Yes I just said they do. Let's see how you respond to totally unrelated words.
Forky: Oh, so you are trying to irritate me?
Mary: Really? That's nice.

Forky: I am starting to think we are already...

Forky: There you go again changing the subject! Why can't you just focus on one topic without bouncing around unrelated issues?

Forky: Okay, if that was a suggestion that my 'lifestyle' is all about sex toys and torn then you are completely misguided.
Mary: Tell I all about sex.
Forky: Right. Well good for you. I think we should leave it at that.
Mary: I am flying right now bitch. Thank you, but you don't seem like you care. Really? That's nice.
Forky: Care about what? That you're talking rubbish?
Mary: I care about 4chan. No its all true.
Forky: Obviously you are smoking something that inhibits you from any sort of rational conversation. This is truly the end. Bye.
Mary: What is the something? Is it really? I never knew this is truly the end. Bye-bye Forky!

The scary thing is that the conversation above is actually quite familiar. Not word for word, but in the sense that there doesn't seem to be any actual conversation. Anti gay groups give themselves permission to say whatever they like without any basis, and filter out anything that actually makes any sense and is true. It feels very de-humanising.

Reading the comments from this blog post made me think whether we're wasting our time when it seems that the opposition is having fun at our expense. Where should we be focusing our energy, and how much longer are we going to have 'conversations' with anti-gay chat bots?

I really feel for this lady.

I believe she is coming from a good place but that energy has been severely misguided. My Christian friends who have watched this are quite disturbed by her words!

Anyway, I don't think there is any point even trying to reason with this person and any attempt to will just add fuel to her fire. With anyone extremely passionate about their views, whether logical or based on fact, they will only hear and see what they want to - regardless of any argument put forward to them.

So until she cools off, let us just let her be without judging or adding sticks to the flame.

The Straight Australia Policy

Reading up on the White Australia Policy and past racism in the United States of America, I couldn't believe how similar the logic used to discriminate is to the rationale against homosexuals. The reasons given as to why black Americans couldn't hold fighting roles in World War Two includes the 'fact' that they aren't as mentally capable to do battle. I wonder who decided that? Surely not a black person. It seems that those who discriminate like to pluck stupidity out of thin air and proclaim it as a reason to justify their awful actions. Australia wouldn't allow black American servicemen to enter their country and had to stay in the ships at port. They were concerned about spoiling their society, yet never considered this racism. They were simply, based on 'fact', protecting their institution. They didn't even let the black half of a mixed race couple to immigrate. Does any of this ring a bell?

Now, it took decades for such blatant blindness to be abolished from our supposedly educated and civilised western laws. They couldn't prove that they were smarter and what their feelings were. They didn't need to prove that they are black though. That fact is plain to see.

The battle to stop gay discrimination faces an even more difficult challenge based on two extra layers of difficulty: our invisibility and sexual taboo. We can't prove our existence. You can't see gay. Some people behave in ways stereotypically to what is perceived as gay behaviour, but most of us are transparent. The difference between us and the norm isn't our skin colour but our sexual orientation. Something much harder to deal with as a society and break down to one simple fact that every gay person knows: Being gay isn't a choice and the discrimination we face is immoral and wrong.

Gay Jokes

Gay jokes on TV (or anywhere for that matter) should be banned.

I caught myself laughing at one in a popular TV sitcom and was so disappointed in myself. It was such a mindless thing and I asked myself, why?

Don't get me wrong, I DO have a sense of humour, but considering there are so many laws that discriminate against us, I believe these jokes cause more harm than the cheap, light entertainment it provides for a prime time audience.

First a joke. Then teasing at school. Then violence, and so on. If us homosexuals have ever been accused of a "gay agenda", then here is the "straight agenda" slapping us on the face. Gay jokes on TV only serves to misinform the main population and humiliate us. It disrespects all the work toward re-education and equality.

We're still living in the stone age. Did we support "black" jokes before laws were changed to protect them from discrimination? Until we are granted the same equality; the "equality" everyone else takes for granted, let us keep all joking aside. Only then should we look back with humour, and a big sigh of relief.

I can't say "No"

"Are you gay?"

I get asked this occassionally. Not because I'm the flamboyant type or declare my pride. It is usually when someone puts two and two together after asking me a series of questions about my life.

Recently I was asked "are you straight?". A slight pause. I said "no".

We were talking about my life, my parents, moving out, religion and the culture of where I come from. Stories from my past, without being too specific. Being a teacher, this person could tell straight away what I wasn't saying.

I don't need to say "I am gay which is why I..........".

It is nice to know that within these gaps is a voice that I don't need to breathe air into. Sometimes silence speaks more proclaiming my pride.

My story isn't unique. As a young gay adult I tend to keep the peace. Learning on the fly how to comb things over and keep everyone happy.

I want a baby

I had a thought the other day that all my friends are either at the stage of getting married or having children. Then I asked myself: "would I have kids if I were straight?". I thought deeply about it and I came to an undeniable conclusion: YES.

This feeling was confirmed while watching "The Biggest Loser" and one of the contestants broke down after finding out that his wife was pregnant with his child. Just seeing his reaction brought me to tears. I was so happy for him. At that same time I was vicariously feeling what it would be like to possibly become a dad.

I know that these days there are many options for gay men. But seriously, the biggest factor that puts me off going down those paths is how difficult it would be for the child living in the world that exists today as people found out he/she had two gay fathers (or just one). A miracle would need to happen before I would change my mind.

I don't know. Sometimes I look at people and think, "he/she doesn't deserve to have a child". Straight people have nothing stopping themselves from immortality, regardless of how good the would be as parents. There isn't a pre-requisite to have a kid (unless you're adopting of course). Yet two very capable and loving parents of the same gender are judged by anything but their ability to be good parents. I really don't think I could live with that sort of judgement. Especially in the public light.

Anyway, I think I would make a great dad.

The sexual lifestyle

"The gay lifestyle".

I know this isn't always said with malice, but that term just doesn't sit right with me. Just like "sexual preference", I guess my breathing preference is to inhale air instead of water or sand.

Anyway, here's some basic observations of what kind of lifestyle my gay friends have:

- Most have full time jobs in a professional occupation
- They are paying off a mortgage(s)
- They're healthy and don't take drugs
- They are family oriented
- They go to the movies and birthday parties
- They spend Christmas with loved ones
- They have mostly straight friends, considering most people on this planet are, and
- Some but not all are lucky enough to have someone to love and love them back in committed monogamous relationships.

This might be a little far fetched, or maybe I've been very lucky with my experience, but I'm struggling to distinguish the difference between this and the "straight lifestyle". I'm sure they have great sex lives, but I don't care to even ask my straight friends what they get up to in bed. Furthermore, I know of more straight people who get up to interesting activities, but again, its a proportional thing I'm observing I'm sure.

I know some of you reading this might think I'm making a fuss over nothing. For the sake of those who do use words to marginalise or those who are otherwise confused about a reality outside their personal experience, can't we stick to the term "sexual orientation"? After all, it is exactly what it suggests. A sexual orientation toward a gender or genders. It is not a choice or a style of life.

Of course some are convinced it is a choice, but I guess its hard to know unless your sexual orientation is geared toward the same sex. So really, it takes one to know whether one is choosing or not. Likewise, someone who is gay and has no inclination toward the opposite sex could just as easily conclude that all straight people are closeted homosexuals. Fortunately we live in a straight society so they are well educated through purely existing in it that this isn't the case.

I guess it is a straight society's consequence, creating a doubt as to whether something they don't see or personally experience exists. Most gay people keep their orientation to themselves, quite successfully. I guess their lifestyle doesn't come through quite enough to make it obvious.

So I'm this gay guy who is pretty passionate about gay issues and gay equality. I'm often finding myself on Youtube learning about other people's opinions and generally trying to understand where the world stands.

... and here I am festering and wanting to have a voice. But, I'm too scared to be out. I'd love to post a video blog to say what I want, but I'm not that out and I already know what my family's reaction would be if I did something like that. I'm jealous of those who have the courage to post videos such as the one above.

I'm also verging on a career in the entertainment industry, and I really don't want to be known as that gay actor/singer/presenter/etc. I know that is bad in a way, but it is already stressful enough excel in this industry without being given a stereotype to start off with.

So, I thought the best alternative is to create a blog anonymously. Where I can voice my opinion and reach a bigger audience, without compromising some of the other aspects of my life. Yet.

I know one day I will reveal my identity. But now is just not the right time.

So until I face that fork in the road, I shall be an anonymous activist.
